Sumerian Shakespeare
Gudea Tablet

This beautiful tablet is from Gudea (his name is on the 5th line down). It is dedicated to the god Ningirsu. It is not clay, but carved stone. The translation is similar to the foundation cone on the Gudea Translation page. On this tablet, Gudea commemorates his restoration of a defensive wall for the city of Girsu. The necessity of restoring the city's defenses indicates the kind of times that Gudea lived in. Enlarge the tablet.
